AWAY WITH THE BIRDIES

Hello Friends,

Today I'd like to share with you some practice watercolor paintings I've been doing of birds. I absolutely adore birds, which is one reason I chose to join Louise De Masi's Patreon channel. She is an amazing watercolor artist in Australia who shares my love of birds.

First I followed her Yellow Robin tutorial, using her line drawing. I forgot to take note of the paper I used, but I employed my Dr. PH. Martin Hydrus liquid watercolors as my paints.

Then I decided to try a goldfinch, using my own drawing. We have a lot of goldfinches here in the summer and I just love their bright yellow breasts. Again I used my Hydrus paints. The paper was not 100% cotton so the background didn't come out as nicely as I'd hoped.
For my next three paintings I used Artist Loft gouache (Michael's brand) and three different grades of cotton paper: Academy Cold Pressed, Academy Hot Pressed and Artistico Fabriano Cold Pressed. They all say 100% cotton. I used a Louise de Masi tutorial and her line drawing for the hummingbird. The gouache I used is the mini palette I made up last week out of a peppermint tin.

Academy Cold Pressed Cotton

Academy Hot Pressed Cotton
Artistico Fabriano Cold Pressed Cotton

I can't say I found much difference between the Academy and Artistico cold pressed papers, but I did like the way the paint flowed on the hot pressed paper.

I plan to do the same experiment this weekend, using my Hydrus paints. I'll fill you in on the results next week.

Hugs & smiles,
Teresa

Great subjects for your paintings. The hummingbirds will soon be leaving us but the goldfinches will tough out the winter with their human friends who perhaps will provide a little food for them.
