Liquid Watercolours

 Hello Friends,

Last week I shared some paintings I did of a hummingbird, using the tutorial and line drawing of Lousie de Masi. Last time I used Artist Loft gouache paints. These latest practice paintings were done with Dr. PH Martin's Hydrus Fine Art liquid watercolor paints. I love the vibrancy of these paints and they do claim to be light-fast.

Again, I used three different papers: Academy Cold-Pressed, Academy Hot-Pressed, and Artistico Fabriano Cold-Pressed. All papers are 140 lb. I'll post last week's gouache paintings on the left and this week's Hydrus paintings on the right.

Artistico Fabriano Cold-pressed watercolour paper (140 lb.)

Academy Cold-pressed watercolour paper (140 lb.)

Academy Hot-pressed watercolour paper (140 lb.)

I really love the vibrancy of the Hydrus paints, but I don't recommend letting them dry in the palette. They don't reactivate as nicely as traditional watercolours. Some of the colours (like brown) granulated so badly, it was like painting with watery dirt. Next time I will only put out as much paint as I can use in one session. By the way, I used similar or identical colours in gouache as I did in the Hydrus paintings. (I apologize for the blurriness of the gouache birds.)

Thanks for dropping by. I'd love to hear what paints and papers you like best, judging from these photos or from your own watercolour experiences.

Hugs & smiles,

Teresa
