Playing with Scraps - Part Two

Hello Again,

I did something really fun with some of my paper scraps today, using a tutorial by blogger friend, Desire Fourie. If you are one of Desire's 1,000+ followers you know about her wonderfully unique style and her delightful handmade embellishments. For each embellishment I cut out five 2" squares and rounded the corners. Once I started piecing my first embellishment together I realized that I should have used double-sided patterned paper. But since there are no mistakes in art; only opportunities to do it differently; I decided to combine two sets of my cut papers. I re-folded one set to have the patterned side in and the white side out. Then I glued each one to the white side of my first set. I also sandwiched some burgundy tulle between my two cardstock pieces. For my final touch I added a pearl to the center and puffed up the 'petals'.

I had a few strips of tulle leftover so I scrunched it up, glued it to the center of my next cardstock base and cut it into thin strips. I glued my patterned pieces around the tulle center and puffed them up a bit too. (Sometime later I decided to trim the strips up a bit)

My next two embellishments are more true to Desire's style, but with my own twists.

Desire usually folds back the top of each petal toward the center. Since the inside of my double-sided paper was solid coloured, I folded the tip back onto itself to expose the patterned side. If I had thought ahead I would have done all of my original folds with the patterned paper on the inside, but my 'mistake' inspired me to do it this way. I completed the embellishment with a sparkly flower.

I didn't fold back my petals on this next one. Instead I puffed them up and added a little flower that I cut from a snippet of the same patterned paper. I scrunched and folded the petals before adding it to the center with Tacky Glue. I pushed the center down hard with a stylus until the glue dried. Then I added a tiny yellow rhinestone.

Remember, there are no mistakes in art, but if you really hate your results you can always throw it in the trash. That is where paper scraps are supposed to go anyway - or so I have been told. :)
