Bookmarks & Painting Fun

Hello Folks,

Last Saturday, I had a bit of play with paint, starting with Flip the bird.

I bought a bird-shaped plaque at the dollar store a few months back. It hangs from a cord on the door leading to our basement studio, which is also where I write. When I'm in the thick of creating, I'm imagining what my character is feeling, seeing, smelling, as though I'm experiencing everything through her eyes and senses. If I'm interrupted, it's like being shaken out of a dream. No matter how short the interruption, it takes time and effort to get back to that creative space.

On one side of the bird I wrote, "Writer at Work" and left the other side plain. My husband and son learned to check the plaque before they decided to interrupt me. One day my son asked, "So, are you going to flip us the bird today?"

I'd always intended to paint my bird-shaped plaque. After a few fails, I managed this colorful result with a bright acrylic pour.
My Scottish Mum taught me not to be wasteful, so I smooshed sheets of watercolor paper into the leftover paint. I got lots of pretty pull-offs before the colors became muddy.

Once the paint was dry, I cut the backgrounds into 45 bookmark shapes, including rounded corners. This week I've been stamping, stenciling and hand-painting each one. So far, I have 22 completed and varnished bookmarks, with 23 to go. Here are some samples of the finished ones.

Thanks for letting me share my week with you. What have you been doing creatively this week? I'd love to hear about it.

Hugs & smiles,
Teresa

WOW, Teresa, the bookmarks are fantastic! I can only hope that one of them was tucked into my copy of your book. :-D Love the sweet little bird, flipped or not. Hugs, my friend.
