I have been busy this week getting ready to teach my first mixed media course at a home school conference this weekend. I made a new project from scratch so I could take notes, as I went along, of instructions for my students and also a thorough list of supplies to bring.
I wanted a masculine design for my mixed media canvas so I started with a picture of my dad, taken during his service in WWII. Dad passed away in 2003 but I don't think I ever thanked him for his bravery in going to fight for our freedoms and those of others. This project was my way of honoring his sacrifice.
I altered chipboard letters that had shiny, colourful surfaces. It took 3 coats of Gesso to cover them. I did the backs as well to prevent warping. Once the paint was completely dry I heat-embossed them with SU cherry cobbler embossing powder. Then I sponged on Art Ingredients mica powder gold, mixed with a little black acrylic paint. I also painted the edges and back with the gold paint mixture. My final touch was to hot-glue on some star gems and the letters to the design.
I adhered a wide grosgrain ribbon to the side of the canvas with Aleene's Tacky Glue (love that stuff), letting the ribbon hang over the left edge a bit. A narrow striped grosgrain ribbon was glued on top of that. Then I added a sticker gem embellishment. I used some Tacky Glue on that too, for permanency.
Doesn't my dad look handsome in his uniform? He was only 19 years old when he enlisted. I can't imagine ever being that brave. He operated as a dispatch riding, dodging bullets on his Harley to take vital information from camp to camp. Most of the time he was all alone. What perseverance it must have taken to fulfill his duty and then come back home with a missing thumb and a found Scottish bride. I'm glad I took the time to honour his sacrifice.
